Lumbar Puncture

For certain neurological conditions, it is sometimes necessary to complete lumbar puncture. This procedure is done in the hospital’s radiology suite under fluoroscopic guidance and consists of collecting spinal fluid that is analyzed in the laboratory.

Results of the lumbar puncture are then used to determine diagnosis and decide the best treatment option for the patient.

This procedure may help diagnose meningitis, multiple sclerosis, optic neuritis, neuropathy and other diseases. It is important for the patient to discuss lumbar puncture with the neurologist to learn the benefits and possible complications.
