Neuropathy

Neuropathy is a disorder of the peripheral nerves. Injury to the peripheral nerve may be caused by compression on the nerve. This may occur in the neck, lower back area but also at the wrist, elbow or knee level.

Peripheral nerves can also be easily affected by other conditions in the body: diabetes, lack of vitamins, rheumatological conditions, infections or even cancer.

Evaluation may include EMG/NCV study, but also laboratory studies or imaging studies.

After diagnosis is established, it is important to establish the cause of neuropathy. Sometimes a biopsy of the skin or peripheral nerve is also necessary.

Treatments include corrective measures, medications or physical therapy.

Genetic neuropathy usually presents itself in during childhood or early adulthood. Orthotic devices or surgery may be helpful to improve functionality of the patient.
