Headaches
Headaches are one of the most common medical problems. Frequently they are mild and transient. For new onset headaches that are persistent, changed or accompanied with additional symptoms Neurological evaluation may be warranted.
Information about location, frequency, pattern, intensity and additional symptoms with headaches, together with neurological examination and diagnostic testing may be necessary to determine type of the headache that patient has.
Once correct diagnosis is established proper treatment may be initiated. Most of the headaches are primary: tension, migraine variant and neck pain related. Treatment may include: nutrition or life style changes, physical therapy but also prescription medication, injections or neuro-stimulation therapy. Sometimes psychological counseling may be helpful. BOTOX® Cosmetic injections are usually given if prescription medications are not effective enough.
Secondary headaches that are results of vascular anomalies, increased fluid pressure, tumors, infection or inflammation usually require additional diagnostic testing and referral to other specialists for consultation.
It is important to emphasize that only a proper neurological evaluation may be able to arrive to correct diagnosis.
Working with your neurologist and establishing the best possible treatment with the best possible outcome sometimes require times and patience, but is the best way to achieve long term results.
